The Story of Um Ahmed
Project Title: Livelihood Support and Community Empowerment
Donor: Lutheran World Relief (LWR)
Implementing Agency: Al-Aghsan Foundation for Agriculture and Environment Development
Year: 2019
Location: Nineveh Plains – Nineveh Governorate
Um Ahmed, a displaced woman from the Nineveh Plains, returned after ISIS occupation to find her home destroyed and her livelihood lost. Facing emotional trauma and economic hardship, she joined the Livelihood Support Project funded by LWR and implemented by Al-Aghsan Foundation.
She received psychosocial support and agricultural training in water management, greenhouse farming, and marketing. With a greenhouse, water well, and livestock provided by the foundation, Um Ahmed rebuilt her life and became a certified local trainer, empowering other women in her community.
Today, she stands as a symbol of resilience and recovery, showcasing the impact of integrated livelihood interventions and the leadership role of women in post-conflict Iraq.
